More than 2.6 billion mobile phone chargers and chargers for phones sold globally last year, a staggering rise of nearly 100 million, according to a new study by the Pew Research Center.
The study shows the market is worth more than $50 billion annually, an increase of more than 300 percent since 2009.
“Mobile phone accessories are the most popular form of personal electronics, yet they’re not the most valuable,” said Peter Smith, Pew Research associate director for research.
Pew Research’s study, “The World’s Most Popular Mobile Phone Accessories Market: 2011,” found that mobile phone accessory sales totaled $50.9 billion in 2011, an 18 percent increase over 2010.
The survey found that the mobile phone industry, with an estimated $5.3 trillion in annual revenue, has grown to more than 40,000 companies, and that there are more than 10,000 manufacturers in the United States.
A recent study by IDC found that sales of phones with embedded chargers, such as the iPhone 5, accounted for a larger portion of total handset sales than the total phone industry in the same year.
In the past five years, smartphone accessories sales have surpassed that of smartphones, including the new generation of iPhones.
Smith said there are some similarities between the two sectors.
The two sectors have similar growth rates and are complementary, but the market’s size is also growing rapidly.
Mobile phone makers are becoming increasingly focused on charging phones to make them more affordable, and they’re also increasing the amount of power that smartphones have.
Consumers are increasingly switching to smartphones and tablets as the primary mode of mobile communications, Smith said.
There is a growing number of consumers who want a high-quality mobile phone charger.
But the market has yet to fully address the issues surrounding mobile phone batteries and the quality of charger.
While most mobile phone makers have made significant strides to improve battery life, Smith noted that consumers need to know how to properly charge phones to maximize their battery life.
More:Mobile phone charger manufacturers should be making more charging stations and adding a range of charging options, Smith added.
For example, in 2010, the company that makes the best chargers in the world, LG, said it would charge phones up to 25 percent faster than its competition.
According to Smith, the growth in smartphone accessories is largely driven by consumers choosing to use phones for work and entertainment, where they don’t have to constantly charge their devices.
This is not the first time the Pew survey has found a spike in sales of smartphone accessories.
In 2013, the research group surveyed consumers about the impact of the global financial crisis on their spending habits.
In 2015, the study asked Americans about the popularity of new smartphone accessories, and in 2017, Pew asked about smartphone sales.
