A team of Canadian researchers is working on a battery that will remove old batteries in your car.
The idea is simple: it’s basically a rechargeable battery, but it’s made of pure oxygen.
The team has been working on the battery since 2012, and it’s one of the first that is entirely oxygen-based.
“There’s really nothing like this in the world right now,” said Paul Pfeiffer, an electrical engineering graduate student at McMaster University.
“I mean, we haven’t had one in 10 years.”
Pfeiffers team developed a rechargeably-based battery that uses oxygen, a material with a low-energy but high-volume that has a special place in the automotive industry because of its low energy density.
It’s a technology that has been used in some electric cars since they were introduced in the early 2000s, but the team has never used it in a car before.
“So I think it’s sort of like an evolutionary step forward in terms of battery technology,” said Pfeillers co-researcher, Ben Kopecky.
“You know, this is kind of a novel technology that’s been around for a long time.”
They’re gonna need more oxygen, Kopecks team saysThe battery has a large, hollow core, which Pfeffers says is ideal for making batteries because it allows them to fit inside a vehicle.
“There are very few materials that have this kind of capacity, so it’s a really good fit for the vehicle,” said Kopecko.
If the team can create a larger, lighter, cheaper, and more reliable battery, it could eventually make cars a lot quieter.
With an air gap between the electrodes, oxygen is absorbed and stored in the material, preventing the batteries from burning out.
The battery would be much more difficult to manufacture, however, because it’s still an all-oxygen battery.
“What you have to make sure is you’ve got the right kind of electrolytes, and you’ve gotta have enough oxygen,” said John Stott, a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Waterloo.
“If you’re looking for a battery with low energy, this isn’t the kind of battery that’s going to do that,” said Stott.
What’s more, the battery won’t work as well as a lithium-ion battery, which has been shown to be environmentally friendly and a lot more efficient.
That’s why the team is working to develop a replacement for the current generation of batteries.
“I think it would be a very big step forward,” said Mihai Kostopoulos, the project manager at the Canadian company New Light Technologies.
“But I think that’s the way it’s going, you know, to get there.
It could take another few years before we can do that.”
The team is also working on using the oxygen-filled batteries in new automotive technologies.
They want to use them to power headlights, fog lights, and so on.
New Light Technologies has already developed a fuel cell, but that’s only the start.
The team is hoping to eventually develop a rechargeABLE battery that can replace batteries in cars that are not currently designed for them.
“The battery could be used for things like power storage,” said Tereza Sadeh, the co-founder of New Light Technology.
“Or maybe it could be useful in powering electric buses.
Or it could go into space.
Or maybe it can be used in a solar cell.
I think these are all interesting things that we want to be able to look at.”
